Team JOHNSTONE / HAYES
The Hayes name is synonymous with racing success and coupled with the experience of an Olympic equestrian legend, this formidable pair will be hard to beat.

About the team
Johnstone wears numerous riding helmets with style – including popular coach, trainer and Olympic show jumper. He represented Australia in the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 and competed across the world in the Nations Cup in Finland, Norway and Sweden. He now spends his days breeding and training the very best horses and riders, competing at an elite level in Australia and around the world.
Hayes knows winners. He has trained over 2800 of them over the course of his unstoppable career as an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. His impressive stats include a total of 91 Group One winners (in Australia, Hong Kong and Japan) who have streaked to the front of the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Golden Slipper Stakes. Hayes became the youngest member to enter the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
Jump Off Horses
An absolute racing legend with 109 starts – this champion gelding knows a thing or two about racing and was known for his trademark dash down the home stretch. One of his most impressive achievements was winning his 100th start and it’s easy to see why Extra Zero is one of David Hayes’ all time favourite horses. Extra Zero knows he’s a superstar with a commanding presence around the stable, he’s a relaxed horse to handle. Extra Zero has transitioned into show jumping with a naturally bold but careful jumping style, he’s economical and correct. Straight off the track and into Jump Off, if there was ever an athlete to go the distance – you’d put your money on Extra Zero.

Poitier or ‘Sid’ is a favourite around the stable. He has an accepting temperament and impressed Russell Johnstone early with his easy going nature, trainability and eagerness to please. He’s a clever horse with a willingness to learn and try new things. Sid has taken to his second career like a duck to water with a smooth and even jumping technique. Around mealtimes Sid can be a bit of a guts – he loves his food. He’ll always walk to the other horses feed bins to check out what they got before returning to his own. If dedication to mealtime is anything to go by, Sid is a committed contender for Jump Off.

An orphan foal from one month of age, Bolivar didn’t have the perfect start in life. He did however become used to people very quickly and is super quiet and easy to handle as a result. Perhaps he got a little too used to people which might explain his cheeky confidence at times. Bolivar has a lovely long canter stride for a little horse with a springy scopey jump which impressed Russell Johnstone from the get go. Bolivar’s racing career didn’t amount to much but he’s out to prove himself in his second career as a show jumper. He can play the tough guy and boss the other horses around but he’s a fantastic addition to Team Johnstone/Hayes.

Mr O’Postrophe (Mr O)
This softly spoken gentleman has a big heart and affable nature. His temperament is so good, he was often used a track buddy for young or spooky horses and, since finishing his racing career, has even been ridden by an 8-year-old. His owner says he loves nothing more than to canter around like a giraffe in the dressage ring just to annoy her! That aside, there’s not much wrong with Mr O’Postrophe. He is super reliable and never refuses at a jump. If anything – he can be a little too enthusiastic! With a super snappy jump in the front, it’s easy to see why Russell Johnstone was impressed by Mr O.
